Five for a Friday #10

Yesterday was wild.   Tara’s blood pressure spiked yesterday morning again, and the doctor did not want to wait another week…he said that the baby would need to be delivered right away.   The c-section was originally planned for next week, but since we had to do it yesterday, we had little time to pack bags and prepare.

However, everything worked out beautifully.  The staff at the hospital are amazing (and amazingly friendly)…a very different atmosphere than the hospital in which Donovan was born.

The baby’s name is Marcus Damien Brown, and here’s a picture of him.

Damien...approximately 15 minutes old.

In this picture, it looks like he’s contemplating his next chess move.  A brilliant young man…just brilliant!

Anyway, here’s today’s Five for a Friday…

Five Baby Names We Decided Against

1.  Johnathan Desmond Brown
A few years ago, Donovan told us that he wanted to be a doctor when he grew up, so we told him that his initials MD (for Michael Donovan) were appropriate.  He could be known as M.D. Brown, M.D.  He thought that was cute.  For the new baby, we considered another doctor…JD (as in Doctor of Jurisprudence).  So we played with those names for a bit…

2.  Joe Douglas Brown
Another J.D. name.  I think we quickly abandoned this one…it made him sound like an old man from Mississippi with dentures and a bad knee.

3.  Jaxon Brown
Back in May, my mother called me while I was in the middle of a conference in Kansas City to tell me that she came up with the perfect name.  She said we should name the baby Jaxon Brown because it “sounds so good…and you could spell it with an X.”  I told her it ain’t gon’ happen…I didn’t want to give him a celebrity’s name.  She never heard of the singer Jackson Browne, and so she figured that no one else has heard of him either.  Last night, she still sounded disappointed that we didn’t name the baby Jaxon.

4.  Jason Raymond Brown
After a while, we abandoned the JD initials and were simply searching for good names.  I’ve always thought the name Jason was a strong name for a boy, so this was my choice.  I’ve always liked Jason…and everybody loves Raymond (hee hee), so I asked Tara what she thought.  She really did not like it.  She doesn’t like the name Jason, and she likes the name Raymond even less.  Besides, everyone would have called him JR…which would give us flashbacks to the ’80s TV show Dallas.

5.  Jack Bauer Brown
The best action show on TV, 24, ended last May, and I thought “What better way is there to honor the end of an era than by having our son’s name pay tribute to the greatest action hero of our time?”  Tara said no (she’s such a girl).  Besides, our baby would have to live up to his name…he’d walk around the house slapping everyone and shouting, “WHERE’S THE BOTTLE?  JUST TELL ME WHERE THE BOTTLE IS!”

Congratulations! My son and daughter both have JD initials. I’m glad you were able to agree on a name, and it’s a very nice name.

    He’s so cute! Congrats!

Jack Bauer would have been pretty awesome. Oh well. What’s done is done.

Soulquarian Quote of the Day

"There is no hip hop manual for growing old...The 22-year-old college grad who used to love the Roots in 1994 never left. He’s just 40 now and has a wife and kids and doesn’t feel like spending all night at a club."
