Five for a Friday #12

Today’s Five for a Friday…

Five Great Things about October

October is my favorite month of the year…and here are a few reasons why.

1.  Fall Colors and Fall Weather
After graduating from college in 1994, I went to work on the east coast at an outdoor education program called Nature’s Classroom.  The program had several locations, but I was sent to the Colebrook, Connecticut site located in the Berkshire Mountains.  The place was amazing, but October is really something to see there.  Our campsite had no TV or radio recpetion, and the closest store of any kind was a 20-minute drive down the mountain.  That was the first time I heard the term “leaf-peepers”.  Leaf-peepers are tourists (and I guess locals also) who clog New England towns during the fall to just look at the changing colors of the mountains and hillsides.  There’s something about October…the one month of the year when we’re closest to the physical bittersweet beauty that is our planet.

2.  Halloween
Great holiday.  The only day of the year when your neighbors give you candy in exchange for you toilet papering somebody else’s house.  I also like the fact that Halloween costumes have become more and more creative over the years…like these.

3.  October 12
Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship Incorporated was founded on October 12, 1962.  ‘Nuff said.

4.  Fall Sports
In October, we have the sports confluence of the NFL season, the start of the NBA season, and the wrapping up of the MLB season.

5.   Late October Scorpios
It’s a known fact that Scorpios are outstanding.  Period.  But there’s something about those Scorpios (like myself) born in the last week or so of October that actually stand head and shoulders above the rest.  Some of the most passionate, focused, and creative people fall into that category such as Teddy Roosevelt, Henry “The Fonz” Winkler, Weird Al, Ruby Dee, John Keats, John Adams, Pablos Picasso, Gabrielle Union, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Gabrielle Union, Ezra Pound, Gabrielle Union, Bill Gates, Gabrielle Union, Bruce Jenner, and Gabrielle Union.  Unfortunately, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Tila Tequila fall into this group of Scorpios…but at our last “Late October Scorpios” meeting, we agreed not to claim them.

I like most of your list. Sports, not so much. But, I love the fall colors, and hope to be a leaf-peeper some day! I love the man-eating monster costume! And, I’m a scorpio (November birthday).

Soulquarian Quote of the Day

"There is no hip hop manual for growing old...The 22-year-old college grad who used to love the Roots in 1994 never left. He’s just 40 now and has a wife and kids and doesn’t feel like spending all night at a club."
